Solomon and his 700 Wives
Did God condemn him for it?
Whenever the topic of polygamy is brought up Muslims will usually refer the Christians back to their own Bible, where prophets and men of God were marrying more than one wife, hence why are Christians attacking the concept of polygamy in Islam when it is clearly being done and condoned in the Bible?
One of the most common cases we the Muslims bring up is the polygamy practiced by Solomon, prophet Solomon is reported to have 700 wives according to the Bible! Now Christians claim oh well Solomon was wrong, and that God condemned Solomon for practicing polygamy, however so is that a reality, did God really condemn Solomon for practicing polygamy? Well, let us find out for ourselves, let us read the very same passages that Christians bring up, the passages that supposedly condemn Solomon for practicing polygamy. The passages come from 1 Kings 11:1-8:
1Now(A) King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, 2from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the people of Israel,(B) "You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. 3He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. 4For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and(C) his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God,(D) as was the heart of David his father. 5For Solomon went after(E) Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after(F) Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and did not wholly follow the LORD, as David his father had done. 7Then Solomon built a high place for(G) Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for(H) Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. 8And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods.
Hmmm, no where in these passages does condemn Solomon for practicing polygamy, rather God condemns Solomon for marrying FOREIGN WOMEN instead of Israelite women! That is why God got mad at Solomon, because he married women from pagan nations, not because he married 700 women! These verses in point of fact PROVE that polygamy is allowed, however so what is not allowed is to marry the foreign women. So Christians are simply wrong in claiming these passages condemn polygamy, they do no such thing at all.
And Allah Knows Best!
