Critics of Islam have become numerous in the past decade, due to Islam's growing influence in the media and the 9/11 attacks six years ago made many Westerners who previously never heard of Islam aware of this great religion and the growing influence that it is playing in the world.

One of the critics most famous tactics to defame Islam is to defame and discredit the character of the Glorious Prophet Muhammad. Their charges are numerous; from lecher to pedophile to mass-murderer to even being labeled a narcissist!

Truly, the label of "narcissist" is extremely popular on the FaithFreedom website, especially with the site owner who spends a large amount of time in trying to examine the character and the mental state of the Prophet.

Basically a narcissist is someone who is fascinated with himself and who believes that he truly is better than his contemporaries. Narcissists are also known to have a lack of empathy and self-preoccupation.

However, the critics of Islam need to realize that Muslims know that a "narcissist" is actually one of the last things you would label Muhammad. The man was humble, even when he was the absolute ruler over the entire

In fact the Prophet even said:

(Tirmidhi 046 : 313 : Hadith 001)
'Umar says: ''The Prophet said: 'Do not exceed in praising me as the Christians over-praised Jesus. (That they made him the son of God.) I am a bondsman of Allah, therefore, call me the bondsman of Allah and His Prophet".

Commentary: Do not praise me in such a manner which is contrary to the bonds-manship of Allah where shirk (partnership) is created with Allah. A bondsman is a bondsman. Do not praise in such a manner that does not befit, and is contrary to the mission of a Rasul and Messenger of Allah.

A narcissist wouldn't go out of his way to condemn the folks who excessively praised him, as such actions would have huge effects on his ego and character. This hadith alone proves that the Great Prophet wasn't a narcissist at all.

This hadith below highlights the pious and humble nature of the Prophet, even when he was the leader of
Arabia. He did not really think of himself as better and more above than the people who were his constituents.

(Tirmidhi 046 : 318 : Hadith 006)
Anas bin Maalik reports: "No one was more beloved to the Sahaabah than the Prophet. When they saw him they did not stand up, knowing that he did not approve of it".

After reading the above hadith, one would have to conclude that Muhammad was a humble man who didn't even approve of his people standing up in his prescence (as a sign of respect).

If the Prophet was a narcissist and a false Prophet as Ali Sina loves to claim, then why isn't the Quran riddled with praise for Muhammad? Yes the Quran has one or two verses which say that Muhammad had an excellent character, but to use such verses to prove his narcissism is downright pathetic. In fact, Allah says:

Quran 3:144: "And Muhammad is no more than a messenger; the messengers have already passed away before him; if then he dies or is killed will you turn back upon your heels? And whoever turns back upon his heels!s, he will by no means do harm to Allah in the least and Allah will reward the grateful."

This Quranic passage highlights the fact that Muhammad was a normal human being who would die one day, and that he was no different then any of the other Prophets. Would a narcissist "forge" such statements about himself into the Quran? Wouldn't a "narcissist false Prophet" make sure that the Quran was riddled about the Prophet, his life, his battle victories and his characteristics?

Why would the Quran emphasize the importance in not making distinctions between the Messengers?

Quran 4:152: And those who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not make a distinction between any of them-- Allah will grant them their rewards; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Quran 2.136: "Say: We believe in Allah and (in) that which had been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Issac and Jacob and the tribes, and (in) that which was given to Moses and Jesus, and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit."

Quran 2:285 "The messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Thy forgiveness (do we crave), and to Thee is the eventual course."

Quran 3:84 "Say: We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Issac and Jacob and the tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit."

The Quran tells us not to make a distinction between any of the Messengers, what kind of sane human being would believe that this would be the words of a narcissistic false Prophet? Just because there are a couple praises of the Prophet here and there, it doesn't prove that he was a narcissist, because the Prophet was a Noble Man who deserved to be acknowledged.

Quran 80:1-11- "He frowned and turned (his) back, Because there came to him the blind man. And what would make you know that he would purify himself, Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), To him do you address yourself. And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself And as to him who comes to you striving hard.And he fears, From him will you divert yourself. Nay! surely it is an admonishment.

Allah is criticizing Muhammad for a minor fault! This passage of the Quran actually further highlights the Noble Character of the Prophet, and that frowning in the face of a blind man was the worst fault that the Prophet ever committed. Such actions doesn't even constitute as a sin! Would any sane person believe that these words would be the words of a narcissist who forged the Quran to meet his desires?"

Why is the Quran filled with Praise of Allah, Description of the Hereafter, Warnings for the Day of Judgement, Laws and Stories of the Prophets of Old? Wouldn't the Quran rather be filled with Praise for Muhammad, description of his qualities, and other works you would expect from a typical narcissist?

Why did the Prophet himself say in the Hadith that there should be no distinction between the Messengers?

(Sahih Muslim Book 030, Number 5854:)
Abu Fluraira reported that two persons, one from amongst the Jews and the other from amongst the Muslims, fell into dispute and began to abuse one another. The Muslim said: By Him Who chose Muhammad (may peace be upon him) in the worlds. And the Jew said: By Him Who chose Moses in the worlds. Thereupon the Muslim lifted his hand and slapped at the face of the Jew. The Jew went to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and told him about his affair and the affair of the Muslim. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) laid: Don't make me superior to Moses for mankind will swoon and I would be the 'first to recover from it and Moses would be at that time seizing the side of the Throne and I do not know (whether) he would swoon and would recover before me or Allah would make an exception for him.

In fact, the Prophet himself stated that the "Best of Creation" was Abraham, not him.

(Sahih Muslim Book 030, Number 5841):

Anas b. Malik reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: O, the best of creation; thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: He is Abraham (peace be upon him).

The Prophet himself did not approve of praise:

(Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 48, Number 831):
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ashari:
The Prophet heard someone praising another and exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet said, "You have ruined or cut the man's back (by praising him so much).

He hated it and he even said that Allah does not love proud people, and Proud People are those who look down at the people in scorn, which would be typical for how a narcissist would act.

A narcissist would be someone who would believe that he is far above the people, and he would make sure that he would have a luxurious life, because narcissists believe that such lifestyles suit them. However, the Prophet was known to live an austere and humble lifestyle which would not be the type of life that a narcissist would have engaged in.

Book 042, Number 7089:
'A'isha reported: We the family of Muhammad (may peace be upon him) used to spend (the whole) month in which we (did not need to) kindle the fire as (we had nothing to cook) ; we had only dates and water (to fill our bellies).

The Prophet lived such a lifestyle, even when he was the absolute authority of the entire
Arabia and he had access to millions of Dirhams. Here are more hadiths that shed light on the austere lifestyle that the Prophet lived:

(Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 65, Number 287):

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The family of Muhammad did not eat their fill for three successive days till he died.

Volume 7, Book 65, Number 298:

Narrated Anas:
To the best of my knowledge, the Prophet did not take his meals in a big tray at all, nor did he ever eat well-baked thin bread, nor did he ever eat at a dining table.

Volume 7, Book 65, Number 324:
Narrated Abu Hazim:
I asked Sahl bin Sad, "Did Allah's Apostle ever eat white flour?" Sahl said, "Allah's Apostle never saw white flour since Allah sent him as an Apostle till He took him unto Him." I asked, "Did the people have (use) sieves during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle?" Sahl said, "Allah's Apostle never saw (used) a sieve since Allah sent him as an Apostle until He took him unto Him," I said, "How could you eat barley unsifted?" he said, "We used to grind it and then blow off its husk, and after the husk flew away, we used to prepare the dough (bake) and eat it."

Volume 7, Book 65, Number 325:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
that he passed by a group of people in front of whom there was a roasted sheep. They invited him but he refused to eat and said, "Allah's Apostle left this world without satisfying his hunger even with barley bread."

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 65, Number 326:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet never took his meals at a dining table, nor in small plates, and he never ate thin well-baked bread. (The sub-narrator asked Qatada, "Over what did they use to take their meals?" Qatada said, "On leather dining sheets."

Volume 7, Book 65, Number 327:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The family of Muhammad had not eaten wheat bread to their satisfaction for three consecutive days since his arrival at
Medina till he died.

The Prophet lived a humble life, even when he died, and it would be ridiculous for anyone to assume that he would claim to be a Prophet to simply receive money, power and sex. He could have got it during his time in
Mecca in exchange for him giving up the Message of Islam, but he refused. What kind of narcissist would refuse such an offer?

In fact this Hadith sheds even more light on the lifestyle of the Prophet:

Volume 7, Book 65, Number 297:
Narrated Qatada:
We were in the company of Anas whose baker was with him. Anas said, The Prophet did not eat thin bread, or a roasted sheep till he met Allah

Sahih Muslim Book 009, Number 3507:
'Umar b. al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) reported: When Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) kept himself away from his wives, I entered the mosque, and found people striking the ground with pebblesand saying: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) has divorced his wives, and that was before they were commanded to observe seclusion 'Umar said to himself: I must find this (actual position) today. So I went to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) and said (to her): Daughter of Abu Bakr, have you gone to the extent of giving trouble to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)? Thereupon she said: Son of Khattab, you have nothing to do with me, and I have nothing to do with you. You should look to your own receptacle. He ('Umar) said: I visited Hafsa daughter of 'Umar, and said to her: Hafsa, the (news) has reached me that you cause Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) trouble. You know that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) does not love you, and had I not been (your father) he would have divorced you. (On hearing this) she wept bitterly. I said to her: Where is Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)? Shesaid: He is in the attic room. I went in and found Rabah, the servant of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), sitting on the thresholds of the window dangling his feet on the hollow wood of the date-palm with the help of which Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) climbed (to the apartment) and came down. I cried: 0 Rabah, seek permission for me from Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him). Rabah cast a glance at the apartment and then looked toward me but said nothing. I again said: Rabah, seek permission for me from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). Rabah looked towards the apartment and then cast a glance at me, but said nothig. I then raised my voice and said: 0 Rabah, seek permission for me from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). I think that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) is under the impression that I have come for the sake of Hafsa. By Allah, if Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) would command me to strike her neck, I would certainly strike her neck. I raised my voice and he pointed me to climb up (and get into his apartment). I visited Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), and he was lying on a mat. I sat down and he drew up his lower garment over him and he had nothing (else) over him, and that the mat had left its marks on his sides.

I looked with my eyes in the store room of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). I found only a handful of barley equal to one sa' and an equal quantity of the leaves of Mimosa Flava placed in the nook of the cell, and a semi-tanned leather bag hanging (in one side), and I was moved to tears (on seeing this extremely austere living of the Holy Prophet), and he said: Ibn Khattab, what wakes you weep?
I said: Apostle of Allah, why should I not shed tears? This mat has left its marks on your sides and I do not see in your store room (except these few things) that I have seen; Ceasar and Closroes are leading their lives in plenty whereas you are Allah's Messenger. His chosen one, and that is your store! He said: Ibn Khattab, aren't you satisfied that for us (there should be the prosperity) of the Hereafter, and for them (there should be the prosperity of) this world? I said: Yes. And as I had entered I had seen the signs of anger on his face, and I therefore, said: Messenger of Allah, what trouble do you feel from your wives, and if youhave divorced them, verily Allah is with you, His angels, Gabriel, Mika'il, I and Abu Bakr and the believers are with you. And seldom I talked and (which I uttered on that day) I hoped that Allah would testify to my words that I uttered. And so the verse of option (Ayat al-Takhyir) was revealed. Maybe his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your place wives better than you..." (Ixv. 5). And if you back up one another against him, then surely Allah is his Patron, and Gabriel and the righteous believers, and the angels after that are the aidera (lvi. 4). And it was 'A'isha, daughter of Abu Bakr, and Hafsa who had prevailed upon all the wives of Allah's Prophet (way peace be upon him) for (pressing them for mote money). I said: Messenger of Allah, have you divorced them? He said: No. I said: Messenger of Allah, I entered the mosque and found the Muslims playing with pebbles (absorbed in thought) and saying: Allah's Messenger has divorced his wives. Should I get down and inform there that you have not divorced them? He said: Yes, if you so like. And I went on talking to him until I (found) the signs of anger disappeared on his face and (his seriousness was changed to a happy mood and as a result thereof) his face had the natural tranquillity upon it and he laughed and his teeth were the most charming (among the teeth) of all people. Then Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) climbed down and I also climbed down and catching hold of the wood of the palm-tree and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) came down (with such ease) as if he was walking on the ground, not touching anything with his hand (to get support). I said: Messenger of Allah, you remained in your apartment for twenty-nine days. He said: (At times) the month consists of twenty-nine days. I stood at the door of the mosque and I called out at the top of my voice: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) has not divorced his wives (and it was on this occasion that this) verse was revealed:" And if any matter pertaining to peace or alarm comes within their ken, they broadcast it; whereas, if they would refer it to the Apostle and those who have been entrusted with authority amongst them, those of them who are engaged in obtaining intelligence would indeed know (what to do with) it" (iv 83). And it was I who understood this matter, and Allah revealed the verse pertaining to option (given to the Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him in regard to the retaining or divorcing of his wives).

His close friend Umar wept for the State of the Prophet, for he knew that the Prophet could have lived a better lifestyle if he wanted to, but he didn't. The Prophet certainly had access to vast amounts of wealth in the State Treasury, but he chose to live an austere life.

He was a man who was not preoccupied with his lifestyle in the world, rather Muhammad was focusing in on the Hereafter and he spent large amounts of time praying and asking for Allah's Mercy.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 478:
Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba:
The Prophet used to pray so much that his feet used to become edematous or swollen, and when he was asked as to why he prays so much, he would say, "Shall I not be a thankful slave (to Allah)?"

This Hadith is one of the ultimate proofs that the Prophet was a great human being who lived a humble lifestyle and who spent large amounts of time worshipping his Lord, an action you would never expect from a narcissist.

The Prophet could've made his people think that he was a God. After all, the Christians worshipped Jesus, some Shia worshipped Ali and the Bahais worship Bahaullah. But he didn't. He made sure that his followers worshipped the one true God and to not engage in Shirk by worshipping to or sacrificing to Muhammad.

Such actions can never be expected of narcissists. In fact, narcissists are also known to have a lack of empathy. If Muhammad was a narcissist, then why did he encourage many times to treat the poor with respect? Why did he command in feeding the poor and treating the orphan and the widow well?

Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 126:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet used to recite the Holy Qur'an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare).

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 74n:
Narrated Anas: The Prophet was the best, the bravest and the most generous of all the people. Once when the people of
Medina got frightened, the Prophet rode a horse and went ahead of them and said, "We found this horse very fast."

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 277:
Narrated Anas:
Allah's Apostle was the (most handsome), most generous and the bravest of all the people. Once the people of
Medina got frightened having heard an uproar at night. So, the Prophet met the people while he was riding an unsaddled horse belonging to Abu Talha and carrying his sword (slung over his shoulder). He said (to them), "Don't get scared, don't get scared." Then he added, "I found it (i.e the horse) very fast."

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 202:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "They say Al-Karm (the generous), and in fact Al-Karm is the heart of a believer."

The Prophet was known to have been an extremely generous individual who had great identification with the unfortunate and the poor, you would never expect a narcissist to possess such characteristics! Narcissists are expected to hoard money and live a luxurious lifestyle, you would expect them to not give a dime to the poor, and engage in constant self-praising.

In fact, you would also expect a narcissist to be boastful and "cocky" but this wasn't the case for the Prophet:

Sahih Muslim Book 030, Number 5739:
Abu Sa'id Khudri reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was more modest than the virgin behind the curtain (or in the apartment), and when he disliked anything, we recognised that from his face.

The Prophet had a shy character and such characteristics in fact wouldn't be expected of a narcissistic pshycopath.

But furthermore, Ali Sina claims that the Prophet was a narcissist mainly because of the Hadith where Allah supposedly says to Muhammad: Were it not for you I wouldn't have Created the Universe.

Here is a Mufti's opinion of such a Hadith, and Hadith scholars conclude that this hadith is mawdoo (fabricated). Sheikh Albaani himself said that this hadith is fabricated and that it has no basis. As to the other hadiths that Ali Sina lists, he never quotes from an authentic source at all. He listed five hadiths and he only provided references to a couple of them, the rest have no basis at all. Allah Created the Pen first, not the Prophet's mind. Ali Sina fails to prove that the Prophet was a narcissist, and thus resorts to quoting fabricated Hadiths to suit his goals.

The claim that he was a Narcissist is one of Ali Sina's favorites, as it gives him "license" to claim that Muhammad "fabricated excuses" to attack his enemies. We Muslims should always be equipped against the lies and slanders of Non-Muslim critics.
