Your Deeds won't save you

Sami Zaatari

Christians often claim that Islam is all about works, and that our salvation depends on whether we have more good deeds than bad, and on top of this the Christian then goes on to ask how do we the Muslims know for sure that we have more good deeds than bad?

For starters this claim has already been proven to be an ignorant argument against Islam, because salvation in Islam does not depend on a person's works alone, rather it depends on a person's work and FAITH, meaning his belief, it is a combination of the two, and we have already discussed this in a previous article:

But now I want to put the nail in the coffin for this argument, and all I will do is quote two hadiths from the prophet Muhammad himself:

Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 470:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The deeds of anyone of you will not save you." They said, "Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise)."

So here we have an explicit and clear hadith by the prophet Muhammad himself stating that our deeds will not save us, in fact the prophet Muhammad went even further stating that his very own deeds will not save him as well, and this basically means that deeds are not the sole means to salvation for the Muslim as the Christians ignorantly claim.

We also read in the second hadith:

Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 471:

Narrated 'Aisha:

Allah's Apostle said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah's is the most regular and constant even though it were little."

So again the prophet Muhammad clarifies this issue and makes it clear that our good deeds will not make us enter paradise, hence a Muslim's salvation does not lie in his good works or good deeds, and hence the Christians have been attacking a STRAW MAN the whole time, and have been basically arguing against a doctrine that does not even exist for the Muslims!

And Allah Knows Best!
