Bowing to Adam and Joseph

Is it Worship?

Most recently I crushed Shamoun's weak and silly claims against Islamic monotheism, which can be found here:

http://muslim-responses.com/Shamoun_and_Tawheed/Shamoun_and_Tawheed_

One of the main points that were raised by Shamoun was that the angels bowed down to Adam, and that the family of Joseph bowed down to Joseph, therefore this is shirk, and this proves Islamic monotheism is wrong.

In the above rebuttal I showed how no worship was given, but not content with being refuted once, Shamoun has come back for more.

Now in my rebuttal I made a challenge to Shamoun which stated:

For starters, when the angels bowed to Adam, and when Joseph's family bowed to him, this was NOT an ACT OF WORSHIP. Now if they bowed down in worship then okay Shamoun would have AN EXCELLENT CASE, but now I challenge Shamoun to bring a single Islamic reference from the Quran, from the Hadiths, and from the Ijma of Islamic scholars which claim that the above mentioned passages were prostrations of worship.

If Shamoun can show that the prostration to Adam was a prostration of worship, and likewise for Joseph, then I will shut down this website and leave Islam.

Shamoun thinks he has met this challenge, he writes:

However, I don't need to prove that these were blatant acts of worship since Zaatari does that for me in his very own article. Zaatari admits that all acts of worship belong to God alone,

Now what is Tawhid of Worship? Tawheed of Worship is to believe THAT ALL ACTS OF WORSHIP BELONG TO GOD ALONE, this goes from YOUR PRAYERS, your sacrificing, your vows, your hope, your fear, your trust, and so forth and so forth, all of this belongs to God. (Capital emphasis ours)

And since the Quran connects bowing down or prostrating to Allah with service or worship:

Surely those who are with thy Lord wax not too proud to serve Him (?ibadatihi); they chant His praise, and to Him they bow (yasjudoona). S. 7:206 Arberry

And of His signs are the night and the day, the sun and the moon. Bow not yourselves (la tasjudoo) to the sun and moon, but bow yourselves (wa-osjudoo) to God who created them, if Him you serve (ta-abudoona). S. 41:37

Rather prostrate yourselves (fa-osjudoo) before Allah and serve (wa-oabudoo) Him. S. 53:62 Pickthall

This means that the angels and Joseph's family were guilty of worshiping the creation instead of the creator!

RESPONSE

It seems Shamoun ignored part of my response in part one, which is typical, so I will quote it again:

(I saw (in a dream) eleven stars...) In the laws of these and previous Prophets, it was allowed for the people to prostrate before the men of authority, when they met them. This practice was allowed in the law of Adam until the law of `Isa, peace be upon them, but was later prohibited in our law. Islam made prostration exclusively for Allah Alone, the Exalted and Most Honored. The implication of this statement was collected from Qatadah and other scholars.

The above is from Shamoun's favourite tafsir commentary Ibn Kathir! Did Shamoun conveniently ignore this part? Shamoun goes on to paste several articles and fatwas from Islam-Qa which state that bowing or prostrating to anyone other than Allah is banned because it is an act of worship, yet these fatwas and the verses they mention ARE IN REGARDS TO THE MUSLIMS, AND OUR PRESENT SITUATION!!!!!!

As Ibn Kathir mentioned above, in the past bowing down and prostrating to others was something completely normal and practiced, but when Allah revealed the Quran to the prophet Muhammad, and made Islam the religion for mankind, he specifically banned this act to be practiced on anyone other than Allah.

Furthermore as I mentioned in the previous article:

For starters, when the angels bowed to Adam, and when Joseph's family bowed to him, this was NOT an ACT OF WORSHIP. Now if they bowed down in worship then okay Shamoun would have AN EXCELLENT CASE, but now I challenge Shamoun to bring a single Islamic reference from the Quran, from the Hadiths, and from the Ijma of Islamic scholars which claim that the above mentioned passages were prostrations of worship.

The reason why the angels bowed down to Adam was to show mankind's superiority over the other creations. The reason why the family of Joseph bowed down to him was a sign of his leadership, and a sign of their submitting and respect for his leadership, after all these were the same family members (excluding his father) who looked down upon him, who threw him down a well and left him for dead!

Shamoun has not even bothered to tackle the above issues, and he will never be able to, he will never be able to meet my challenge, which is to show that when Adam was bowed to, and when Joseph was bowed to, that these were acts of worship being given to them, the above refutation I wrote crystal clearly proved they were not bows or prostrations of worship, but rather prostrations of respect and authority.

Put this with the second point I mentioned that back then this was something very normal, and something that was allowed, and something that was NOT SEEN AS A UNIQUE ACT OF WORSHIP as it is now and after the revealing of Islam.

Furthermore this missionary happily quotes Islam-Qa talking about how prostrating to others is wrong and sinful, as this is an act of worship for Allah alone etc, yet why doesn't he quote their fatwa on the very precise topic he is arguing about?! Since he couldn't do so, I will do it for him, and here is what they say:

Praise be to Allaah.

Prostrating is of two kinds:

It may an act of veneration and drawing closer to the one to whom one prostrates. This kind of prostration is worship, and should only be done for Allaah, according to the laws of the Prophets.

The second type is a kind of greeting and honouring a person. This is the kind of prostration which Allaah commanded the angels to do in the case of Adam, so they prostrated to him as an act of honouring him. It was an act of worship towards Allaah on their part, because they were obeying His command to prostrate to Adam.

The prostration of Yoosuf's parents and brothers was also a prostration of greeting and honouring, which was permissible according to the law (of Allaah) at that time. But according to the sharee'ah brought by the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), it is not permissible to prostrate to anyone at all except Allaah. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "If I were to have commanded anyone to prostrate to anyone else, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade Mu'aadh to prostrate to him when he (Mu'aadh) said that the People of the Book prostrated to the great ones among them, and he mentioned the hadeeth quoted above. The prohibition in this sharee'ah against prostrating to anyone at all except Allaah is an aspect of its perfection in achieving true Tawheed. It is the perfect sharee'ah whose perfection is manifested in all its rulings. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" [al-Maa'idah 5:3]  (http://islamqa.com/en/ref/8492/prostrating%20to%20adam)

So it is that simple, and the challenge to Shamoun remains, obviously he will never be able to meet it, so Shamoun is in fantasy land when he writes:

It is now time for Zaatari to shut down his website and leave the false religion of Islam, since this is what he said he would do if I proved to him that Adam and Joseph received worship by Allah's express command and approval.

You have proven nothing, all you have proven is that you are not qualified to analyze and discuss Islamic verses, and Islamic monotheism, and no my friend, you have not met the challenge at all, far from it, so I will repeat it again: BRING US EVIDENCE THAT THE PROSTRATION TO ADAM AND JOSEPH WERE PROSTRATIONS OF WORSHIP.

It's not hard Sam.

And Allah Knows Best!
